Jaffrey Ice Racing
Association started back in the 30’s on Lake Contoocook in Jaffrey N.H., know
by some as Sunshine Lake. For years Ice Racing was part of
Jaffrey New Hampshire’s Winter Carnival. Unfortunately by 1980, due to poor ice
conditions the club nearly disbanded, but for a few dedicated members,
who were able to find a new location to race, Swallow
Hill Pond in Ashburnham MA.
Consequently
in 1981 Jaffrey Ice Racing Association Incorporated (J.I.R.A.) was formed with the few
remaining members and many new members, including past members of, Whalom auto
racing of Fitchburg MA, and Watatic Ice Racing Association of Winchendon (both
had disbanded in the 70’s).
The
club was very active and did well until the 90’s, when again poor ice conditions
caused the club to move to Whitney Pond in Winchendon MA. While the
pond was a little small for racing it helped keep the club together, until they
were able to return to Lake Contoocook in 2001, so here we are back home, on
Sunshine Lake.
